Rajasthan’s First Startup Summit
Rajasthan Startup Fest, state’s first Startup focused national event, was organised in Jaipur on 9th and 10th October, 2015 by Startup Oasis along with Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO) with the Centre of Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) as the knowledge partner. Startup Oasis is a joint initiative of RIICO and CIIE set-up in 2013 to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the state of Rajasthan.
The objective of the event was to position Rajasthan as one of the most preferred startup destinations of North and West India by providing a platform to the startup ecosystem players from the state and the country to meet, interact, learn and transact business. Honourable Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje inaugurated the event and also unveiled the ‘Rajasthan Startup Policy – 2015’. Mr. Arun Nanda, Chairman of Mahindra Holidays and the Keynote Speaker expressed his interest to mentor and investment in around 100 startups in Rajasthan.
Day 1 of the Fest started saw investor panel discussions with some of the top angel and venture capital investors of India sharing their views on the current startup investment scenario in India. 27 startups (including 6 impact startups) pitched in front of close to 30 investors through multiple Demo Day and Pitching Tracks. 18 startups received positive responses and follow on interest from the investors. In parallel, knowledge sessions and mentoring clinics were organised for the more early stage startups where domain experts from the industry imparted their knowledge and shared their experience. Second half of Day 1 had the Etailing Conclave with series of panel discussions and workshops on the latest trends in the e-commerce industry.
Day 2 of the Fest started with DisrupTalks – a series of talks by some of the most disruptive startup founders and entrepreneurs in India, sharing their life journeys and experiences. Ramana Gogula – techie turned musician turned startup founder, Ms. Kalyani Khona – founder of a dating site for the differently abled, Akram Firoze – founder of Cycle Natak and an avid traveller, Nishant Patni – founder of Culture Alley, India’s most popular online English leaning app and Rahul Narvekar – founder of IndianRoots.com, fascinated the students and startups in the audience with their stories. The day also saw the key startup ecosystem payers of the Rajasthan ecosystem come together on one platform to discuss the current challenges and opportunities for startups and innovation in the state. Parallel workshops were organised for various stakeholders – an Angel Training Workshop for High Net worth Individuals from the state to enable them to become angel investors in startups, You Lead workshop to help students and very early stage entrepreneurs to better align their ideas with their strengths and passion and Startup Weekend Social Boot Camp for aspiring entrepreneurs and students interested in co-creating solutions to some of the key social impact problems of the state.
A startup showcase exhibition was also held in the venue for both the days, that had 50 high potential product startups showcasing their products, innovations and business models. To name a few:
- Aha 3D: India’s first indigenous 3D printer manufacturer based out of Jaipur
- Priptos: a health snack manufacturing and marketing startup
- SRJNA: founded by IIT and XLRI Alumni, addresses the issue of quality education by using 200+ real physical models supported by Virtual Simulations and Smart Assessment
- Jainson Locks: that has developed a Smart Door lock which can be controlled and operated via Bluetooth and through a mobile app.
The Fest concluded with the finals of the Student Business Plan competition, which saw 275 teams apply and the top 3 teams getting awarded cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh by Rajasthan government in addition to other benefits. In all the Fest attracted 150+ startups, 200+ delegates and 800+ students, visitors and aspiring entrepreneurs.
